For Lena Dunham, Holocaust-Cosby Was a Comparison Too Far

“Girls” star and creator Lena Dunham has quickly apologized for comparing obsession with the Holocaust to obsession with the allegations that Bill Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted women over the years.

Dunham’s faux pas didn’t exactly come at a great time — just after the new season of “Girls” debuted on American television. As for Cosby, he has never been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

Dunham had been interviewed in Time Out New York by Jenni Konner, the "Girls" co-showrunner. Konner asked what Dunham thought about the frequent attacks by the show’s producer, Judd Apatow, on Cosby.

“It’s sort of like saying someone’s obsessed with the Holocaust. It’s not 'I’m so angry about Hulk Hogan’s sex tape.' This is a huge issue, and it speaks to the way that we abuse power and the way that celebrity allows for injustice,” Dunham told Time Out New York.

“Everyone else has gone, 'Let’s hope it’s not true.' Chris Rock, who’s an incredible guy and who has a strong sense of social justice, has basically said, 'We’ll see,'" she said in the interview published Friday.

For weeks Apatow has been calling for Cosby’s stand-up gigs to be canceled; he frequently retweets posts against the 77-year-old comedy legend. Apatow has called for Cosby to be sent to prison.

While many Americans respect Apatow as a comic and director making his voice known on a matter many men avoid, some feel he’s trying Cosby out of court. The creator of the TV series “Black-ish,” Kenya Barris, has called Apatow “strangely obsessive.”

Barris has also attacked Apatow on Twitter for the way he portrays black people in his movies, saying Apatow should “stop showing the most fucked off 1 sided view of black people n every thing you ever do.” And: “It’s like ur getn some sick pleasure from watching a black man who meant so much for so many fall.”

As for Dunham, she has also drawn attention for her defense of Apatow.

“The lone voice, the lone male voice, the fact that Judd is such a comedy fan. Like Judd’s whole DNA is a commitment to other comedians. You know, Judd was also one of the first people ever to speak out against Woody Allen. Before any of this happened, he was like, sorry, Woody Allen marrying his daughter is creepy and it’s stopped me from liking his movies,” Dunham told Time Out New York.

“Judd — he’s not moralistic, but he has a strong sense of morality, especially as a father of daughters. He is the most deeply appropriate male I have ever engaged with.”

She quickly apologized on Instagram. “I’m already aware comparing Bill Cosby to the Holocaust wasn’t my best analogy. With Love from your special rape-hating Jew friend LENA”
