When the news broke last week that prolific television screenwriter David E. Kelley is adopting Israeli author Dror Mishani’s “The Missing File” thriller for U.S. television, my first thought was: Wow, he’s finally run out of American novels to work on.
My second thought was whether some U.S. streaming service might now look to buy the rights to the Israeli TV adaptation before Kelley’s version – tentatively called “The Missing,” relocating the adventures of Inspector Avraham Avraham from Holon to New York – airs on Peacock in the coming years. “Tik Ne’edar” (“The Missing File”) aired on public broadcaster Kan for one season in 2019 and is part of a rich catalog of Israeli series that, as far as I’m aware, have never been seen in English-speaking territories but merit a wider audience.
