Kadima MK Tzachi Hanegbi, who chairs the committee, called on Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin to participate in the meeting. The committee is expected to examine ways to ease tensions among the senior defense figures.

"The events surrounding the selection of an [Israel Defense Forces] chief of staff and the tense atmosphere that the process is creating require legislation that would regulate the process and the criteria for the selection of a chief of staff in Israel," said MK Eitan Cabel (Labor ). Cabel, a member of the committee, has prepared a draft bill, which he intends to present to the Knesset soon.

MK Otniel Schneller (Kadima ), who chairs the Oversight Committee of the Defense Establishment, said that he, too, believes criteria are needed, clearly determining who is eligible to compete to be chief of staff.

He added that his committee will evaluate the way senior IDF officers are selected.
