About 20 years late, James Franco finally celebrated his bar mitzvah and became a full-fledged Jewish man on Saturday evening.
- Under the Miley Cyrus influence: Are Israeli kids too Americanized?
- Israeli settler's Miley Cyrus parody is awful, world media rules
- Should we shut up or stand up when celebs slur 'the Jews’?
But Franco's coming-of-age ceremony, part of the Hilarity for Charity's Variety show in Los Angeles, was unfortunately upstaged when Miley Cyrus came up to perform, dressed in a skimpy blue leotard and a gold cape reading "Shalom, ya'll."
Cyrus, whose performance included a foul-mouthed cover of Lulu's Shout and her signature bum twerking and tongue waggling, was also toting a giant Star of David.
"At my bar mitzvah they played Cotton Eye Joe so it's an upgrade," Seth Rogen, who organized the event, said of Cyrus' headlining, the Mirror reported.
Cyrus later took to Instagram to express her thoughts on the somber occasion:
Franco's bar mitzvah was thrown by his fellow star Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren Miller, as part of the Hilarity for Charity's Variety show.
The Rogens set up Hilarity for Charity after Lauren's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 55. Past shows featured the talents of Paul Rudd, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, among others, and the 2014 prom night-themed event raised $1 million.
Franco, whose mother is Jewish, has in the past bemoaned missing out on the Jewish experience, and has expressed the wish to undergo the Jewish rite of passage.
