Jewish fans of Downton Abbey finally have a character to call their own, even if the actor portraying him looks anything but like a member of the tribe.

Atticus Aldridge, played by Matt Barber, fits right in with the rest of British aristocracy, but turns out to be a member of a Ukrainian Jewish family that fled the pogroms in Odessa. He is introduced as the new beau of Lady Rose, one of the show's more mischievous characters.

Rumors back in 2012 circulated that Lady Cora Grantham's mother, Martha Levinson, was of Jewish stock.

However, a book titled "The Chronicles of Downton Abbey" later revealed that Martha was not Jewish but rather her husband was of the Chosen People, and that their children were raised Episcopalians, according to the Jewish Chronicle.
