Disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano is due to stand trial Wednesday in Paris on charges of making anti-Semitic and racist remarks aimed at patrons of a Paris bistro.

Galliano, 50, who was caught on a mobile phone camera drunkenly declaring "I love Hitler," is charged with two counts of insulting patrons at la Perle bistro in the Marais district of Paris, the historic Jewish quarter.

He denies the charges, which relate to two separate incidents between October and February - one involving a 48-year-old woman, the other involving a couple.

The flamboyant Briton, who has been receiving treatment for alcohol and prescription drug addictions since being sacked by French fashion house Dior in March, is expected to plead that his remarks were made under the influence of alcohol and that he is not an anti-Semite.

Both sides - the couple and the woman who pressed charges and Galliano - are expected to produce witnesses who will dispute what he said.

Galliano's case was aggravated by the emergence of a video showing him engaging in a drunken rant about Hitler. If convicted, he faces up to six months in prison and/or a fine of
32,393 dollars.
