British neurologist Oliver Sacks, the author of many well-known books including “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," has died on Sunday at his home in New York City at the age of 82.

His long time personal assistant, Kate Edgar, confirmed his death. She told the New York Times that he died of cancer.

In February, Sacks explained that he was in the late stages of terminal cancer following a melanoma in his eye that had spread to his liver. "[T]hough ocular melanomas metastasize in perhaps 50 percent of cases, given the particulars of my own case, the likelihood was much smaller. I am among the unlucky ones."

Sacks, a medical doctor, was maybe best known for his books, including several collections of case studies of people with neurological disorders. Some of his works had been adapted to film and stage.

Sacks was born on July 9, 1933 in England. He received his medical degree at Oxford University. Soon after he moved to the United States, where, upon completion of his internship, he practiced neurology.
