Jewish community members, leaders, politicians and others gathered on the steps of the California state capitol for a rally against anti-Semitism.

Monday’s Sacramento rally, organized by the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento region, attracted hundreds of participants, the local television station Fox 40 reported. The rally comes after a recent incident at the nearby University of California Davis in which the house for Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi was vandalized with a pair of swastikas, and after a resident of Sacramento’s River Park neighborhood publicly posted American and Israeli flags adorned with swastikas.

The rally also attracted pro-Palestinian protesters to a nearby sidewalk, who carried signs criticizing Israel for alleged human rights abuses.

The Sacramento rally came as California State Senator Richard Pan is proposing a law that would require anti-discrimination and civil rights training for all student governmental bodies, according to television station CBSSacramento.

During the rally, former State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg urged UC campuses to adopt resolutions rejecting anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and racism, according to a report by the Sacramento Bee.
