Sarah Silverman Rails Against 'Vagina Tax' in New Video

According to the U.S. Jewish comedian, the total lost by all America's working women to the gender pay gap during the course of their careers is $30 trillion.

Describing herself as a "vagina owner," comedian Sarah Silverman has unveiled a new video in which she takes on the gender pay gap.

Silverman's video promotes what she calls the Equal Payback Project, which is dedicated to raising precisely $29,811,746,430,000 (that's almost $30 trillion) through crowdsourcing. This amount – she calls it the "vagina tax" – is Silverman's calculation of the money lost by the 69 million female workers in the United States over their working careers due to the gender pay gap.

“Every year, the average woman loses $11,000 to the wage gap,” says Silverman, while sitting in a doctor’s office waiting for her gender-reassignment surgery – an "extreme solution" that is far cheaper than the money she'll lose out on due to the gender pay gap, she says.

Silverman's video may be satirical and the goal of her campaign ($30 trillion) unattainable, but the cause is very real. According to a recent U.S. census bureau report, women earned 78.3 cents for every dollar men earned in 2013.

The money raised from the Equal Payback Project will go towards funding the National Women’s Law Center – a non-profit that works against employment discrimination and focuses on legislative issues to promote gender equality.
