The U.S. rights to a documentary about the private life of Nazi SS Commander Heinrich Himmler, which won the Best Documentary award at this year's Jerusalem Film Festival, has been purchased by Kino Lorber, reports.

"The Decent One," by director Vanessa Lapa, was first shown in Berlin earlier this year. It features personal writings and photos of Himmler, that give the viewer a peek into his private life, and show his take on life in Nazi Germany.

Lapa is the grandchild of Holocaust survivors. Her family recently came into possession of the archive footage, according to NPR. The documentary is only based on the archive material, with actors reading the voice of Himmler and his wife.

The documentary is set to open in the United States at Film Forum in New York, and then to play nationally in order to qualify for the Oscars, said.

'The Decent One' excavates archival history to shed light on the unfathomable Nazi evil as no other film has done, Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber said. Its resonances are profoundly and uniquely relevant to crimes against humanity going on all over the world today.

Kino Lorber, Inc., founded in 2009, is a documentary film distributor.
