eBay Refuses to Auction Nazi-owned Mercedes
Specially-commissioned 1941 Mercedes Benz 540K was commandeered by the U.S. in last days of World War II.
A 1941 Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B specially commissioned by Nazi leader Hermann Wilhelm Goering cannot be auctioned on eBay, the company announced last week.
eBay policy states that "the sale of items owned or affiliated with Nazi Leaders such as Goering" is not permitted, however it does list items from other tyrannical and murderous regimes, such as Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot.
The German car was commandeered by the United States 7th Infantry Regiment on May 4, 1945, one of the last days of World War II, while it was parked outside Berghof, one of Hitler's headquarters. It then became the staff car of Colonel John Heintges until the end of the U.S. occupation of Germany. The car was then brought to the U.S. and sold to another army official, until it fell into the hands of a collector in 1955, where it has been since.
The car was custom made by the German Air Force with a raised back to accommodate a parade platform and police sirens.
