Israel's UN ambassador Ron Prosor accused Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday of denying the Holocaust while calling for another one.

At a ceremony held at the UN headquarters in New York marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Prosor said: "Every year, from this very podium, the Iranian president denies the Holocaust while threatening to carry out another one. Every day, Hamas teaches anti-Semitism to the next generation of children in Gaza, telling them that the Holocaust is 'a lie made up by the Zionists.' Similar messages echo across the Arab world."

During the ceremony, held to mark efforts to rescue European Jews during the Holocaust, Susan Rice, the United States ambassador to the UN, said: "We cannot bring back the victims of the Shoah (Holocaust). But we can rededicate ourselves to expanding the reach of human decency, human dignity, and human rights — today and all days."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a pre-recorded message that the UN has launched a new educational program dedicated to those during the Holocaust who risked their lives in order to save others.

"Acts of genocide illustrate the depths of evil to which individuals and whole societies can descend. But the examples of the brave men and women we celebrate today also demonstrate the capacity of humankind for remarkable good, even during the darkest of days."

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held on January 27, the day Soviet forces liberated the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1945. This year the ceremony was held on Friday, January 25, due January 27 falling on a weekend.

Hundreds of Jewish community representatives attended the ceremony.
