Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow raised eyebrows last week with her announcement that she plans to raise her two children as Jews, coming as it did after her declaration that religion is cause of all of the world's problems.

The Oscar-winning actress says her decision was prompted by a discovery about her Jewish heritage when she appeared on NBCs Who Do You Think You Are?" program a few months ago. The show, which explores the genealogy of its guests, revealed that her father, late film producer Bruce Paltrow, was descended from an illustrious line of east European rabbis, and that her Polish great-great-gandfather was Rabbi Simon Paltrowich.

Speaking at a Young Community Security Trust event in London last week, Paltrow said she planned to raise seven-year-old Apple and five-year-old Moses - her children with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - as Jews.

According to the Daily Mail, Paltrow has previously applauded her parents for her Christian and Jewish upbringing, saying "It was such a nice way to grow up." But she qualified this by adding, "I don't believe in religion. I believe in spirituality. Religion is the cause of all the problems in the world." Perhaps her recent interest in celebrity hobby Kabalah has changed her mind.
