The Jerusalem Post is to have a new editor, 28-year-old Bret Stephens, an editorial page writer on the Wall Street Journal Europe.
Management sources at The Post said last night that Stephens would be taking over in the new year from the present editor, Jeff Barak (Black), who is moving to England to become deputy editor of the Jewish Chronicle.
The appointment of a non-Israeli editor has triggered speculation and some unease among senior Post management and staff privy to the move. Publisher Tom Rose has yet to make an official announcement.
At the Wall Street Journal Europe, Stephens edits the weekly "State of the Union" column on the European Union. He joined the Journal in New York as an editorial features editor. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and a master's from the London School of Economics. The deputy editor of the Wall Street Journal Europe's editorial page, Mike Gonzalez, told Ha'aretz last night that Stephens, who is Jewish, is "very mature for his age."
