Israeli Tour Guide Killed in a Fall in Romanian Mountains

45-year-old Noam Avnun slipped and fell after trying to help a member of his group, head of Romanian rescue team says.

A rescue official says an Israeli tour guide has been killed in a fall in the Fagaras mountains in central Romania.

Noam Avnun, 45, had been trying to help a member of the group he was walking with. Avnun then slipped and fell about 15 to 20 meters (50 to 66 feet), an official with the Romanian search and rescue services said in a statement.

The incident happened Monday in bad weather in the Valea lui Stan area, known as a beautiful spot which is difficult to access.

Nicolae Plesita, head of the Curtea de Arges mountain rescue team, said the victim was accompanied by two women and another man, all from Israel. They were rescued and questioned about the incident Tuesday morning.

Israel's Foreign Ministry confirmed the death, and said it is in contact with Romanian police.
