Israelis across the country paused for a moment of silence on Wednesday to remember fallen members of the security establishment and victims of terror.
At 11 A.M., sirens sounded countrywide for two minutes to mark Memorial Day. Traffic came to a halt, pedestrians stopped in their tracks and workers stood from their chairs.
In the past year, 116 members of the defense establishment were added to the list of fatalities. This included 67 soldiers who were killed in last summer's Operation Protective Edge. In addition, 31 citizens were killed in terror attacks.
This brings the total number of fatalities in battles for Israel since 1860 to 23,320 and the total number of fatalities from terror attacks here since the 1948 War of Independence to 2,538.
