The video shows a group numbering dozens of Palestinian demonstrators surrounding the man’s car as he drove through the Palestinian town of Hawara and pelting it with rocks. A Palestinian ambulance driving in the opposite direction blocks the car of the Israeli man, who accelerates and hits a few of the protesters before firing at the group.
Seconds later, an Israeli army jeep arrives. The soldiers inside fire a smoke grenade at the Palestinians, who remain in the street.
The shooter says he fired into the air before shooting into the crowd. An Israeli military source said the shooter apparently opened fire only after the jeep arrived, but this has not been confirmed by the army.
The Israeli man, a resident of the West Bank settlement of Itamar, related after the incident that he felt the young Palestinians were about to attack him physically, and that he feared for his life.
