TORONTO – One day in August 2016, human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor received two new text messages on his iPhone. The messages asked him to click on a link that would reveal “new secrets” about detainees who were undergoing torture in prisons. Mansoor, a resident of the United Arab Emirates and the recipient of the prestigious Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 2015, had already experienced two spyware attacks in the past. This time he decided to exercise caution.
