Hapoel Tel Aviv loses on return to big time

Hapoel Tel Aviv's return to the top tier of Israeli basketball after a six-year absence was full of emotion and drama, but was ultimately a bitter disappointment for the team that lives in the shadow of cross-town rival Maccabi. In the first game of the new season, Hapoel was beaten in overtime by Bnei Herzliya. Despite the raucous support of around 5,000 fans at the team's new home in Rishon Letzion, Hapoel was unable to hold off Herzliya in overtime, eventually losing 96:88. (Haaretz Sports Staff )

Reds extend manager's contract by two years

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a two-year contract extension with manager Dusty Baker that will keep him with the National League Central division champions through the 2014 season, the team said yesterday. Baker, 63, has compiled a 419-391 record in five seasons with Cincinnati and led the team to Major League Baseball's playoffs twice in the last three years. Baker missed 11 games last month after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and then suffered a minor stroke while being released from hospital. (Reuters )
