Israelis step off gas in Davis Cup tennis tie

A day after clinching its Davis Cup tie against Portugal, Israel dropped both its matches yesterday in Ramat Hasharon. Andy Ram replaced Dudi Sela for the first reverse singles match, losing 7-5, 6-0 to Joao Sousa. Amir Weintraub dropped the second match to Frederico Gil 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Israel won the Europe/Africa Group 1 tie 3-2 and will play Belgium in September, when victory will see it return to the World Group. (Rami Hipsh )

Gymnast Shatilov wins bronze in China

Israeli gymnast Alex Shatilov won a bronze at the China World Cup in the floor exercise yesterday. Shatilov finished behind European champion Flavius Koczi of Romania and American Steven Lagendre. The competition in Zibo City included the top eight gymnasts in the world. (Haaretz Sports Staff )

Knicks top Bulls in Rose's return

Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 43 points, making the go-ahead 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds left in overtime as the New York Knicks spoiled a rusty Derrick Rose's return to the lineup and beat the Chicago Bulls 100-99 yesterday. Rose scored 29 points after missing the previous 12 games with a strained right groin, but he shot only 8 of 26 from the field. (AP )
