In a derby between two Modi’in-based teams, Modi’in-Gezer edged Modi’in 5-3 this week at the Kibbutz Gezer field in Junior League (ages 14-16) action. Pitching was the key for Modi’in-Gezer, with Ori Wachspress hurling three strong innings and Boaz Milgram shutting out Modi’in for the remaining four frames of the seven-inning contest.

Modi’in-Gezer’s infield played flawlessly in support of Wachspress and Milgram, but an outfield error allowed their city rivals to plate two runners in the third inning on a single by Moshe Goldfischer. Yaakov Segal also knocked in a run for Modi’in in the third on a fielder’s choice.

Akiva Schwartz pitched three solid innings for Modi’in and helped himself by stabbing a hard shot by Eli Weber with two outs and bases loaded for Modi’in-Gezer in the bottom of the first. However, the fourth inning was a nightmare for Modi’in, as three pitchers combined to walk seven batters, allowing Modi’in-Gezer to score five times. Eitan Shatkin was effective in relief over the last two innings for Modi’in and also blasted a ground-rule double to center.

Modi’in-Gezer’s win boosted its record in the fall season to 3-1, while Modi’in’s record now stands at 1-3.
