The New Orleans Pelicans announced on Friday that they have decided to waive basketball player Gal Mekel.
The 26-year-old point guard from Petah Tikva was signed by the team on December 5 as an unrestricted free agent. According to NBA.com, he appeared in four games with New Orleans, averaging 1.5 points and 3.3 assists.
As a rookie, Mekel played in 31 games last season for the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 assists per game.
Last November, ESPN reported that Mekel will be trying out for the Los Angeles Lakers. Earlier that month U.S. media reported that Mekel had to give up a spot on another National Basketball Association team, the Indiana Pacers, because of visa problems. The Pacers signed free agent point guard A.J. Price instead.
