Maccabi Tel Aviv football club will play Chelsea, Porto and Dynamo Kiev in the upcoming Champions League tournament, after it was placed in group G during Thursday’s draw in Monaco.
The group is not seen as especially difficult, but it is regarded las being ess attractive for fans than some of the other groups.
The game against English Premier League champions Chelsea, ranked at the top of the group, will be especially interesting for coach Slavisa Jokanovic and stopper Tal Ben Haim, who both formerly played for Chelsea.
ESPN analysts issued their appraisal for the group stage and predicted that Maccabi will finish last in the group. The network said there is a 32.3 percent chance Maccabi will finish third, 9.3 percent chance it will come second and a 1.5 percent chance that it will take first place.
The Champions League will begin on September 15, on the last day of Rosh Hashana, with a group stage that will continue for almost three months. The two teams that finish first in each group will proceed to the quarter finals, while the third will participate in the 32nd finals of the European League. The fourth will be out of the tournament.
This is the second time in the history of the Israeli champions that they will play in the group stage of the tournament, after edging out FC Basel in the play-off stage.
