Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona striker Shimon Abuhatzira scored in the fourth minute of added time to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw with Maccabi Tel Aviv in soccer’s State Cup round-of-16 first-leg tie last night.

The Premier League champion dominated the first half, and took the lead in the 44th minute through mercurial striker Eran Zahavi. In a repeat of last week’s 1-1 game between the two teams, currently first and second in the Premier League table,

Tel Aviv crowded the midfield after the break, only for Abuhazeira to beat Tel Aviv defender to the ball and shoot home in the game’s dying seconds. “We proved that we’re no less good,” Kiryat Shmona coach Barak Bakhar said after the game.

“We’re capable of scoring at [Tel Aviv’s] Bloomfield [stadium in next week’s return leg] and advancing to the next stage."
