Former Champ Nigeria Showing It’s Back With Two Wins

15 nations are competing this year in the third edition of Mundial 5-a-side soccer in Tel Aviv.

A group of 15 nations are competing this year in the third edition of Mundial 5-a-side in Tel Aviv.

Nigeria, the 2012 champions, are back again and leading also this edition with two victories in Group A, followed by Italy, coordinated by coach Raffi Rubi. In this group Motti Colman, a futsal star in Israel, is leading the English team to qualification for quarterfinals, while the U.S. and Germany are still without points, but with one more game to play.

In Group B, Israel qualified as host nation and has six points, followed by Venezuela with three points. In the same group Great Britain, led by Terry Newman and Omer Peleg, are still looking for their first victory, while also the Eritrean selection is still competing for the top 8.

The South American champions of last year are dominating group C with two top-scorers in Huzenmann and Nuchovich, with five goals apiece. Impressive so far was the Netherlands, coached by Daan Bakker. This year, the orange looks very competitive with 10 goals scored by Bakker, Peretz and Mousai, while Belgium is making its debut in this tournament.

The top scorers are Nigerian Magalan Awala with nine goals, Huzemann 5 (ARG), Nuchovich 5 (ARG), Peretz 4 (HOL), Borgenicht 3 (BEL), followed by some top players like Dani Markovits, Ben Levy, Diego Mayo and Moshe Lewis.

This year’s tournament is being held in memory of Mordechai Cohen.
