Baseball: Israel, in bid to reach Tokyo Games, opens strongly in Bulgaria

Israel’s national men’s baseball team tore through its first three games at the European Championships B Pool 2 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, in its quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics next year. Israel dominated Greece 14-7 on Monday, shredded Serbia 11-1 on Tuesday and then blanked host Bulgaria 8-0 on Wednesday to ensure it will get a chance this weekend to play for the title of pool champion. Shlomo Lipetz won the first game in relief, while starters Gabe Cramer and Matt Soren took the latter two contests. Blake Gaillen, who plays AAA with the Dodgers, stood out in the batters’ box, going 7-for-12 with two home runs and five RBIs in the first three games. Israel was scheduled to play Russia, the only other team undefeated so far, on Thursday after press time. The winner of B Pool 2 will take on the winner of B Pool 1 for a chance to move up to Pool A, which will play in September. (Haaretz Sports)
