Israeli swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko won on Saturday the country's first ever gold medal at an Olympic swimming event at the European Aquatics Championship held in Budapest. 17-year-old Gorbenko came first in the women's 200 meter individual medley final with a time of 2:09.99 minutes, also setting a new Israeli record.

She was followed by the United Kingdom's Abbie Wood, with a time of 2:10.03 minutes, and Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, who finished third just seven hundredths of a second later.

The Israeli team's coaches were unsure whether Gorbenko should compete in the race before Friday. However, a good score at the 4 X 200 meter freestyle preliminary event put her in a position to make into the Tokyo Olympic Games, leading to the decision to let her compete at the individual medley race.
