Spain sails into Euro U-21 semis

Spain beat The Netherlands 3-0 at the HaMoshava Stadium in Petah Tikva on Wednesday night to win Group B of the European Under-21 Championship. Julen Lopetegui’s charges won convincingly through goals by Alvaro Morata − his third in three games − Isco and Alvaro Vazquez to qualify for Saturday’s semifinal against Norway at the Netanya Municipal Stadium. The Netherlands will face Group A winner Italy at HaMoshava Stadium in Petah Tikva. In the game between the group’s two eliminated teams, Germany came from behind to beat 10-man Russia 2-1 in Netanya with goals from Patrick Herrmann and Sebastian Rudy. ‏(Haaretz Sports Staff‏)

Former Portuguese star to coach Maccabi TA

Former Portuguese star Paulo Sousa has been named coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv. The 42-year-old Sousa signed a two-year deal on Wednesday and will lead Maccabi’s attempt to qualify for the Champions League group stage. Sousa replaces Spaniard Oscar Garcia, who led the team to the Israeli league title in May but quit for personal reasons. Sousa made 51 appearances for Portugal during a career that included stints with Benfica, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. ‏(AP‏)
