The owners of six National Hockey League teams are sponsoring the Maccabiah ice hockey tournament this month, the Games’ organizers announced yesterday.

The owners are Daryl Katz ‏(Edmonton Oilers‏); Henry Samueli ‏(Anaheim Ducks‏); Ed Snider ‏(Philadelphia Flyers‏); Larry Tanenbaum ‏(Toronto Maple Leafs‏); Cliff Viner ‏(Florida Panthers‏) and Jeff Vinik ‏(Tampa Bay Lightning‏).

The Open and Junior tournaments in Metulla will field teams from Canada, Israel, Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

Team USA’s coaching staff boasts NHL star Eric Nystrom of the Dallas Stars, while Mike Keenan, who led the New York Rangers to their historic 1994 Stanley Cup Championship, and coached the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks to Stanley Cup finals appearances, is coaching Team Canada. The only previous time hockey was played in the Maccabiah was in 1997 as an exhibition sport, organizers said.
