The PLO and Palestinian Authority have called on sponsors and runners to boycott the 2013 Jerusalem marathon due to be held on Friday.

A PLO statement issued on Wednesday said participation in the marathon implies complicity in Israel's illegal annexation of the city's eastern sector.

Some 20,000 runners are expected to take part in Friday's race, part of which goes through Arab east Jerusalem including a short stretch inside the walled Old City.

The PLO and PA have warned Crowne Plaza Hotels and New Balance, two of the marathon's international sponsors, to take legal steps against them unless they withdraw their sponsorship.

Many of the city's streets will remain closed during the entire morning until the early afternoon and the light rail will not run.
