Last weekend’s inclement weather wreaked havoc on the first round of the AFI Men’s Flag Football League playoffs.

With near-freezing temperatures, wind, rain and even some hail, the weekend’s play was heavily affected, leading to a host of upsets. Both the top two seeds in the tournament – the Briut Modi’in Thundermuffins and Shimon Swizzies – suffered defeats, to #32 The Merger and #31 MMJ, respectively. In addition, the tournament’s ninth-seed, The God Squad, lost its game to #26 Joey’s Boys, while #12 seed Launch 3 was upset by #21, Jerry’s Kids.

But other favorites fared better and fended off opposing squads. #4 Big Blue dropped 53 points on Pizzeria Efrat, while #9 Misha’an Levits Plumbing shut out the Raiders 55-0. #5 Tzionim took care of The Monstars by 35, and #3 Imrei Cobras outscored the Clippers by 27.

The teams who lost are not out yet, though, thanks to the tournament’s double-elimination format. This week’s losers will have a chance to save their season by winning each of the next two games. After these games, the league will pare down into tiers, with the top 16 teams fighting to claim the coveted Holyland Trophy.

Three women’s teams go undefeated

Week 8 in the Women’s AFI Flag Football League saw three teams complete undefeated regular seasons. Misha’an Plumbers, Big Blue and Metro Yachad all came through with big victories over DB Beasts, Midknights and Lindenbombers, respectively, by an average of 40 points each. Up next are the playoffs.

Other big winners included Harova and Eden’s Eagles: Harova shut out Ziontours, while Eden’s Eagles defeated Kosher Casual by 26. And Crossroads got back on winning ways with a two-point victory over Wildkatz.
