After opening at the European basketball championships in Slovenia with three insipid defeats, the Israeli national team finally got a win on the board last night, beating Belgium by 18 points in Game 4. Leading at one stage by 27 points, Israel eventually won 87-69.

Despite its abysmal start to the tournament, Israel still has an outside chance of progressing to the next stage - assuming it can beat a strong German team in its last game this evening and results in other games go Israel’s way.

The national team’s performance last night was almost a reverse image of the three defeats that preceded it: All of the players looked interested, their shooting was accurate and they took full advantage of the opponent’s errors.

Omri Casspi, however, continued to disappoint. The NBA star’s 12 minutes on court yielded a total of two points.
