Cricket / Day League / Anticipation Precedes New Cricket Season

Former champions Young Ashdod and Ra'anana will be looking to replace Super Lions Lod.

With players preparing for the upcoming Maccabiah 2013, Israel cricket's highly anticipated Day League should see a thoroughly competitive season. All players will want to impress the national selectors as the cricket competition of the Maccabiah will be one of the biggest ever staged.

The summer lineup includes defending champion South Africa, runner-up India, bronze medalist Israel, Australia, Great Britain and newcomer Canada.

The local league launches today with the opening match in the first division between home team Young Ashdod, the 2011 champion, and visiting Ra'anana, the
2010 champions.

Both teams have been active in the transfer market over the winter, strengthening their squads as they hope to wrestle the title back from 2012 champion Super Lions Lod. The Lions open their season tomorrow with a home match in Lod against Neve Yonatan.

Tomorrow also sees four second-division teams competing, as Ashdod 'A' hosts
last year's second division runner-up, Young Sri Lanka. Also, the Be'er Sheva
derby takes place between Lions Be'er Sheva and Be'er Sheva 'A', which was
relegated from the first division last year.
