Police said Sunday they will question an Israeli soccer player after a video posted on social media showed Beitar Jerusalem star Antony Varenne and three other men sexually assaulting an unresponsive woman.
The woman will also be called in to make a statement in the investigation, which will be conducted by the Central District Police.
It was unclear when the video, which has been distributed on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, was taken.
The French-Israeli forward reportedly told his teammates that he was “embarrassed and sorry. I made a mistake.”
Two of the three other presumed assailants play in lower leagues.
According to an Israel sports website, since the video’s release Varenne has disconnected his cellphone and leaves his home only to train.
Beitar coach Benny Ben Zaken said at a press conference Thursday that the team had not seen the clip so it could not respond to the affair. Varenne played against Maccabi Netanya Saturday and was cheered by the crowds.
