The Israel police arrested a 44-year old man from Tel Aviv after finding eight liters of liquid containing the so-called “rape drug” GHB that he had apparently smuggled in from abroad, after receiving a tip. The police also seized dozens of vials filled with a spiked liquid.
The suspect’s remand was extended for four days in the Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday. The charges include import and distribution of a dangerous drug.
Police suspect the man intended to sell the GHB - or gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid - within the Tel Aviv LGBTQ community, involuntary sexual exploitation.
Also known as "G", it is a commonly used as recreational drug in Tel Aviv's nightlife, where the drug is willingly used to enhance sexual arousal. It is also known as the “date-rape drug” because, police point out, when mixed with alcohol it can render a person incapacitated.
Even voluntary use can take a toll on health. Just three months ago, two members of the gay community who had willingly taken the drug were hospitalized at Soroka Medical Center in Tel Aviv, in bad condition.
