Memoir of Hamas Leader's Son Who Spied for Israel Goes Online

'Son of Hamas,' by Mosab Hassan Yousef, quickly become a best-seller after its U.S. release last year.

An Arabic online version of the memoir, "Son of Hamas," by Mosab Hassan Yousef – the son of a leading Hamas figure who served for Israel's Shin Bet security services for ten years – has been released.

The book was published less than a year ago in the United States, became a best-seller and was even translated into Hebrew.

Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a Hamas founder

Yousef's story was uncovered by Haaretz magazine in August 2008, but it was only in his book that he exposed the secret that he had kept since 1996, when he was first held in prison by Shin Bet agents seeking to enlist him in infiltrating the upper echelon of Hamas.

The Green Prince made personal ties with his handler, Captain Loai, and the two became close friends after Mosab left the region. He currently resides in the United States.

Yousef worked for the duration of his Shin Bet service as an agent in the Hamas leadership and provided information that led to the exposing of numerous Hamas strongmen, including his father. Among other things, he was responsible for the thwarting of Hamas suicide bombings and intentions to kill senior Israeli officials. During this time Hassan converted to Christianity.

'Son of Hamas' will be released in Arabic by Key Media publishers, a constituent of the Al-Hayat TV Corporation, which broadcasts in Hebrew to Christian audiences. Yousef told Haaretz that now that people living in Arab nations are able to read his book, he hopes their opinions relating to extremist Islam will change and their actions will be more understandable.

Yousef's story and its publication caused outrage among Hamas officials. His father, Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a Hamas founder and one of its leaders in the West Bank, who sits in an Israeli prison, said that he disowned Mosab. Hamas tried at first to claim that Haaretz was lying and that Yousef had never been interviewed by the newspaper but they later changed their version.
