Four people were wounded in two stabbing attacks in central Israel yesterday. A 70-year-old man was seriously wounded in a stabbing attack in the coastal city of Netanya, while a 31-year-old man and 80-year-old woman were critically injured earlier in the day in an attack in Rishon Letzion. A man in his twenties was slightly injured in the earlier attack. The assailants in both attacks were apprehended by police.
A 22-year-old Palestinian man was shot by police on the scene in Netanya yesterday evening. The assailant, from the Tul Karm area, was in Israel illegally. First responders treated the victim – who sustained serious injuries to the torso – and the assailant on the scene, before rushing them to the city’s Laniado Hospital.
Raz Levi, a senior Magen David Adom medic, described the scene. “A man aged about 71 lay on the sidewalk. He was fully conscious, with a stab wound in his torso. He told us he was standing on the street, when he suddenly felt he was hit in the back.”
“After the terrorist was shot and incapacitated by the police, a large mob circled and one person started attacking him,” a police officer told Haaretz.
Two men who assaulted the assailant were eventually arrested. One of the attackers, a 40-year-old Netanya resident, will appear in a Petah Tikva court today for arraignment.
Netanya police chief Barak Mordechai said, “I would like to tell the public that we will not allow any effort to harm either police officers or attempts to lynch attackers. These two assailants have been arrested and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
A few hours earlier, three people were wounded in the stabbing attack in Rishon Letzion, south of Tel Aviv.
The Palestinian attacker, a 19-year-old from Hebron, was detained.
The victims were a 35-year-old man who was stabbed in the torso and sustained severe wounds; an 80-year-old woman, who also sustained severe wounds; and a 26-year-old man who was stabbed in the leg and sustained light injuries. They were treated on the scene by first responders and then rushed to Assaf Harofeh Hospital.
The assailant first stabbed the elderly woman, by the old central bus station. After that, he stabbed the man in his 20s and then looked for more victims. He entered a nearby store and stabbed another person inside. He left the store and tried to enter an adjacent one, but a woman closed the door to keep him out. At this point he was detained by police officers, who had to protect him from an angry mob.
