Initial reports say a Palestinian assailant attacked the officer during a confrontation with Israeli security forces near the Negohot settlement in the southern Hebron Hills.
The assailant, who was later identified as Adi Hashem al Masalmeh, a 24-year-old from Beit Awwa, was shot and killed.
Magen David Adom evacuated the officer to Soroka Medical Center, Be’er Sheva.
The attack follows a 24-hour period in which no attacks took place, after near-daily stabbings and two shootings.
The latest attack occurred on Sunday evening, when an Israeli Bedouin from Hura opened fire at the central bus station in Be'er Sheva, killing a soldier and wounding 10 police and civilians. An Eritrean national who was said to have been misidentified as the assailant's accomplice was also shot and killed in the incident.
Tensions have been mounting lately in the Hebron area. Over the weekend, four attacks took place there.
On Friday afternoon, an Israeli soldier was stabbed and moderately wounded during clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians near Hebron. The terrorist was shot and killed on the scene.
On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces said an Israeli pedestrian shot and killed a Palestinian who tried to stab him. Later, a Palestinian woman stabbed a female officer at a Border Police base in Hebron and lightly injured her before the officer shot her dead, police said. In the third incident that day, a 20-year-old soldier was wounded in a stabbing attack near the Tomb of the Patriachs in Hebron. The assailant was shot, apparently by the soldier, and seriously wounded.
Shortly afterward, a Palestinian attempted to stab a Border Police officer at the Qalandiyah checkpoint, near Ramallah. The assailant was shot and seriously wounded. According to Jerusalem Police, the assailant jabbed at the officer with a knife but failed to pierce through his protective vest. Officers fired at the assailant’s lower body, and he fell down. When a sapper examined the assailant for explosives, he pulled another knife and tried to stab the officer. A Border Police officer then fired at the assailant, killing him.
