An Israel Defense Forces soldier in the Armored Corps was seriously wounded on Monday by a machine gun at the Shizafon training base in southern Israel. He was airlifted to a hospital and his family has been informed.

The soldier was wounded during an exercise involving the Merkava 4 tank. The soldier and his commander were trying to dismantle a MAG machine gun installed on the tank when the weapon struck him with great force. The Israel Defense Forces said Tuesday that an investigation has been launched to clarify the circumstances of the incident, and that all training involving the Merkava 4 tank has been suspended.
In January an IDF officer in the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda Battalion was killed and another was wounded during training by a misfired mortar round. Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot dismissed the commander of Armored Corps Battalion 75, Capt. Tal David, whose soldiers fired the mortar.
