An Israeli soldier was seriously wounded on Friday from a grenade that exploded during a military exercise on a base in the south of the country, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit reported. The Military Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

The soldier was taken to be treated at Be’er Sheva’s Soroka Medical Center. The hospital reported that he was being operated on.

The Spokesperson’s Unit also reported that the Ground Forces Command chief, Maj. Gen. Kobi Barak, has ordered the establishment of a team of experts to examine the circumstances of the incident. In the interim, he decided to stop using grenades during training until the preliminary investigation is concluded.

At the end of last month, about ten soldiers were lightly wounded at the Shizafon Base in southern Israel after a smoke grenade exploded. Those soldiers were also taken to the hospital, and the IDF reported that that incident would also be investigated.
