A man attacked an elderly couple Monday in the northern city of Haifa, wounding one severely after attacking two police officers with a saw.

The man, who seemed mentally unstable, barricaded himself alone in the elderly couples' apartment. Emergency services evacuated the two wounded to a city hospital.

SWAT officers breached the apartment after laying siege to the apartment for two hours. The officers threw a smoke grenade through a window in the apartment and overtook the man.

Earlier the man attacked three police officers with a saw and wounded them lightly.

The man, 30, confronted police officers after he tried to enter a hospital with the saw. Upon being stopped, the man assaulted the officers with the saw, causing light wounds and fleeing the scene.

Emergency services arrived at the scene evacuated an 80-year-old man suffering from a head bruise. His condition was declared severe. The woman, also 80, was evacuated with light bruises to her limbs.
