Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi, an officer tipped as a future candidate to become Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, has been named as head of the IDF’s Southern Command in a series of appointments to the 2018 General Staff.
Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman, who is currently commander of the Northern Corps and the military colleges, will replace Halevi as head of Military Intelligence.
Among other appointments, Lt. Col. Neria Yeshurun will become commander of the Armored Corps. As a battalion commander, he was reprimanded in June 2016 for ordering his troops to shell a clinic in Gaza – in retaliation for the death of an officer in his battalion during the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip.
Lt. Col. David Shapira will become commander of the IDF’s Binyamin Brigade. Shapira was the commanding officer of Sgt. Elor Azaria last year when Azaria opened fire and killed a prone Palestinian assailant in Hebron. In a high-profile and contentious trial, Azaria was sentenced to 18 months after being convicted of manslaughter.
This is Eisenkot’s last round of appointments as chief of staff before he leaves the post in 2018.
