Israeli soldiers from the elite Duvdevan unit operating undercover to identify weapons caches in Hebron shot and killed a Palestinian after a short gun battle.

According to an initial report the man opened fire on the Israeli force, and was then shot dead. The IDF said the Palestinian's gun was confiscated.

The Ma'an News Agency reported that the Palestinian who was killed was 23-year-old Iyad Munir Arafat Gait. After the gun battle he was evacuated to a hospital in Hebron.

The soldiers said that the Palestinian charged at them and opened fire.

Incidents of live gunfire in the West Bank at Israeli soldiers, particularly those undercover, is uncommon.

In March, a Palestinian gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli security forces during a raid to arrest him in Al-Bireh, near Ramallah.

The man, identified as Basil al-Araj, was the leader of a cell planning attacks and was responsible for acquiring weapons, a statement from the Border Police said. The army said the al-Araj was a wanted "terrorist."
