Hippo Waltzes Out of Israeli Safari, Then Changes Mind

It's a wild world outside

A young female hippopotamus decided on Wednesday to sample the city life outside her home at the Ramat Gan Safari in central Israel. At 6 P.M, after the safari was closed to visitors, the hippo took advantage of the fact that the gate was open, and headed towards the outside world.

But even as the guards prepared to chase her, the young herbivore backtracked, returning to her safe dwelling. She may have been startled by the unknown surroundings, or simply decided that an urban environment doesn't quite suit her.

The safari said it was investigating the incident. The gate is usually left open for vehicles during the day, but the animals cage was apparenlty left open.
