Israel's army chief Aviv Kochavi decided on Monday to appoint Gil Messing as next IDF spokesperson. Messing, 35, had worked at the Gaza division of the IDF spokesman unit while Kochavi was the division's commander.
Messing will replace Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, who was appointed in 2017. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved Messing's appointment, which is expected to take effect over the next several months.
After his army service, Messing was the spokesperson for former politician Tzipi Livni between 2007 and 2012. He later held various positions at the Strauss Dairy company and at Check Point.
The appointment of a civilian as IDF spokesman raised some eyebrows in the Israeli army, as the last three spokespeople came from within its ranks.
