Israeli Construction Minister Quits Post to Run in Likud Primary
Yoav Gallant will keep his membership in the security cabinet and will be appointed minister without portfolio by Benjamin Netanyahu
Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Gallant announced Sunday that he will resign from his post and quit the Kulanu party in order to run in the Likud primary election.
Gallant will run for a spot on the party's slate ahead of the April 9 general election. Following Gallant's resignation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who heads Likud, will appoint Gallant as a minister without portfolio. In addition, Gallant will keep his membership in the security cabinet.
Gallant gave the announcement alongside finance minister and Kulanu leader, Moshe Kahlon, who thanked Gallant for his work and wished him "success in future endeavors."
The two have experienced a troubled relationship as Kahlon expressed dissatisfaction with Gallant's performance as housing minister. It was reported that Kahlon considered firing Gallant, but decided not to after the resignation of former member Avi Gabbay and the perceived weakening of the Kulanu party.
