"The Green Prince," a documentary about the son of a top Hamas leader who turns into a spy for Israel, clinched the Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by Nadav Schirman, the film is based on "Son of Hamas," an autobiography by Mosab Hassan Yousef, and is narrated by him and his Shin Bet handler, Gonen Ben Yitzchak. It tells the story of Yousef's journey from militant to Shin Bet spy to asylum seeker in the United States.

"The Green Prince" premiered last week at the Park City, Utah, film festival, where it also secured U.K., Australia and New Zealand distribution deals.

“The reception to the film — and to the film’s inspirational protagonists — at Sundance has been extremely gratifying, and we are delighted that there is already such significant interest from the distribution community,” said one of the film's producers, John Battsek, in a statement, Variety reported.

Schirman’s previous films include "The Champagne Spy," which features Mossad agents testifying on camera. It won an Ophir Award, known as the "Israeli Oscar," for best documentary film.
