Israel's Fashion Channel May Be at End of Its Runway

The station, part of the HOT cable network, put its employees on leave at the end of last year, and since Jan. 1 has been showing only re-runs. Now a source says closure is imminent.

They say with fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out. And for Israel's Fashion Channel, it looks like the next day has come.

According to a source at the station, which is part of the HOT cable network, is on the verge of closure. The source asked to remain anonymous because no official announcement has yet been made.

But the channel has been wobbling on its stilettos for quite some time. At the end of last year, when its contract with HOT expired, its employees were put on leave, and for the past two months it has been broadcasting only reruns.

“When our contract with HOT ended we thought we would be back quickly once we raised enough money to keep the channel going,” the source said, adding that, at the time, employees were told they would be back at work by March 1 at the latest. That date has come and gone.

"As of now, we're not even getting ready to produce new programs," he said.
Mor Sofer, head content editor for the channel, said she knew nothing about the shut-down and that talks are still ongoing between HOT and the Fashion Channel’s founder, Noam Edri. Edri confirmed that funding was still being sought.

“We are waiting to see what will happen with our funding. At the moment there are a lot of changes at HOT and the channel and I are a small nuisance,” Edri said.

Edri said no return date for the staff had been set, but did not rule out that the channel, which he established last year, would be sold. “Our budget for next year might be NIS 10 and I might decide I don’t want that. If I feel that we don't have enough money to create a quality channel, I'll step out of it. The Fashion Channel is not my main job," he said.
