The next consumer boycott may target the Strauss Group: The Tel Aviv Student Union launched a Facebook page calling on consumers to boycott the food manufacturer, after previous campaigns against Super-Sol and Tnuva drove the two to lower some of their prices.
The Facebook page is called "Strauss Aino Sheli" (Not My Strauss ) and plays off Strauss' advertising campaign "Strauss Sheli" (My Strauss ) calling on consumers to take an active role in suggesting new products.
The students have not yet started promoting the boycott page, which only has 100 members so far.
Two months ago, the students sent letters to the management of Strauss, Osem and Unilever, calling on them to lower prices under threat of boycott. Unilever and Osem complied, but Strauss decided instead to extend its holiday sales on dairy products through the end of the year.
A student union representative said the group received a phone call from Strauss after launching the Facebook page. "They told us that they'd get back to us in a few days regarding our demands that they lower prices significantly and permanently," said the representative.
The page includes price comparisons between Strauss' products in Israel and food products abroad, and mentions the 2003 antitrust investigation Strauss faced for blocking Cadbury from entering the Israeli market.
Strauss declined to comment.
