Haaretz Wins a Media Innovation Contest

The victors of the Google-sponsored competition will compete at the final in Barcelona in June

Haaretz won the Editors Lab competition on media innovation held on Google’s Tel Aviv campus last week.

The Google-sponsored competition consisted of eight teams from most Israeli news sites and a number of local startup companies. Each team was made up of a journalist, a designer and a developer who had two days to build a prototype on a specific theme centering on maps, geolocation and storytelling.

The Haaretz team – Yoav Segev, Elijahu Malka and Avi Kaufman - won with a prototype called Who Cares? One Stop Shop Elections App, intended to increase the public’s involvement in the approaching elections. The app enables users to see their polling station, compare candidates, see the campaign trail maps and indicate their mood after voting.

The winning team will compete in the Editors Lab Final contest in Barcelona in June against the winning teams of the Editors Lab completion in various countries.

The panel of judges included Biranit Goren, of RGB Media, Mushon Zer-Aviv, a freelance designer and Evangeline de Bourgoing, Global Editors Network’s Programme Manager. “They had the right idea about what a newsroom can do with technology,” said Goren. “We don’t have that many examples of data-journalism usage today. They took this idea and produced something new, which provides the user with new information and necessary service.”

Ynet and Outbrain won special mention with Cartographer and InPress, respectively. The other teams participating were Walla, Israel Hayom, COMAS, Wibbitz and NRG.
